KUALA LUMPUR: Serving three to five years in the rural areas is a non-issue to the 160,000 teachers who are members of the National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP).
“Our members are willing to serve anywhere anytime,” said its secretary-general Lok Yim Pheng.
She told Bernama that the NUTP’s stand was that teachers should give priority to the students and be prepared for personal sacrifices to meet this objective.”
Lok was commenting on the statement by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also Education Minister, that the government was planning to make it compulsory for teachers to serve in the interior for three to five years in their 30-year teaching career.
She the government was already providing hardship allowance of between RM500 and RM1,500 for teachers in the interior.
She hoped that more incentives could be provided to make it attractive for teachers to opt for rural postings.
One area which needed immediate attention was to provide more secure quarters for the teachers, especially the single female.
Lok said the union had received complaints that some of the teachers’ quarters were not fenced up and had poor lighting, thus posing a danger to their safety.
She said that at present, trainee teachers had to sign a bond agreeing to be transferred to the rural areas when the need arose but this was difficult to enforce because of the numerous appeals from teachers.
Lok advised those wanting to join the teaching profession to “think twice before applying for the post if they feel that they cannot serve in the rural areas.” -- Bernama
