PUTRAJAYA: Hiring based on gender by the Public Service Commission (PSC) is only done when there are specific requests by government departments or agencies.
Commission secretary Datuk Lamien Sawiyo said that although this rarely happened, there were departments which specified that vacancies for certain posts were meant to be filled by either men or women.
“For instance the Prisons Department have requested for women to be employed as wardens for its women’s section while certain enforcement authorities wanted men to do the tough job.
“If not for specific cases like these, we do not practise gender quota when hiring people to work for the civil service. Everyone is eligible and all applications will be treated equally,” he told reporters after presenting jerseys to the PSC FA team yesterday.
Lamien was commenting on a recent statement by Cuepacs secretary-general Ahmad Shah Mohd Zin who had complained about an upward trend of female employees in the civil service.
Meanwhile in George Town, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the state government believed in giving everyone, irrespective of gender, an equal chance.
He said among women appointed to top positions in Penang were Penang Municipal Council president Patahiyah Ismail, South Seberang Prai district officer Rohani Hassan and Penang Global Tourism general manager Ooi Geok Ling.
“We believe in giving everyone equal opportunities if they deserve it,” he said in his speech before the swearing-in ceremony of Patahiyah yesterday.
