The prestigious OSS event reaches beyond the government sector and
touches thousands of local and international
experts,
enthusiasts and novices
The
Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Planning Unit’s (MAMPU)
premiere open source software (OSS) event MyGOSSCON held annually since
2007 has become a staple of the public sector.
The prestigious
OSS event has touched and stirred thousands of local and international
experts, enthusiasts and novices.

MAMPU deputy director-general
(ICT) Dr Nor Aliah Mohd Zahri (pic) said MyGOSSCON has reached
beyond the government sector, not only successfully engaging and winning
over OSS converts, but also benefiting from organisational support of
private sector entities, chambers of commerce, and educational
institutions to nurture and expand OSS communities to enhance the “OSS
Ecosystem”.
She said the event leverages a myriad of
opportunities and benefits through plenary and track sessions,
exhibitions, OSS community forums, competitions, and other informative
events.
“It had also offered relevant and in-depth competitions
in the 2009 event with the first 24-Hour OSS Web Development Contest
involving 104 programmers, OSS Case Study Awards with 33 submissions and
OpenOffice.org Competition pitting 16 primary school teams on the theme
“1Malaysia”.
“OSS Showcase Exhibition provides an OSS vendor’s
forum to demonstrate products and services.
“Since 2007, there
has been an evolution from basic solutions to innovative and mature
offerings,” she said.
She said this underscores OSS acceptance by
local ICT industry as a mainstream business opportunity for increasing
ICT industry growth.
Nor Aliah said MyGOSSCON’s visibility has
resulted in numerous requests for government-to-government, OSS
collaboration initiatives from other countries including Saudi Arabia,
South Africa and Sudan.
Before 2007, she said 131 Public Sector
agencies used OSS. MyGOSSCON 2007, 2008 and 2009 increased this number
to 163, 354 and 691 respectively, which reflects a five-fold increase.
This reflects dramatic MyGOSSCON influence on successfully promoting
Public Sector OSS adoption and implementation, she added.
