Ministry setting up blog to gather feedback from the people

KUALA LUMPUR: The Human Resources Ministry is setting up a blog to gather feedback from the people on the minimum wage plan.

Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said the blog would be set up within two weeks and would run for three months before the views would be discussed at the ministerial level.

“Some want the minimum wage to be imposed while others want salaries to be set by market forces. Both views have clear arguments.

“We want the people’s opinions on the matter.

“The blog will help us gain a broader view of opinions.

“We will study the feedback before making a final decision,” he told reporters yesterday before launching a book by Marina Netto titled Contracts of Employment and Malaysian Industrial Law.

He added that minimum wage discussions for the hospitality industry were in the final stages.

On the half-day course for employers and their newly-employed maids, Dr Subramaniam said it would be held once a month.

He added that any weakness encountered would be rectified.

“In the long-term, it will help reduce whatever problems we are facing,” he said.

Dr Subramaniam appealed to the public to give the course a chance.

On the National Union of Bank Employees’ request that maternity leave be increased from 60 days to 90 days, he said there had to be a more in-depth study of the issue.

Dr Subramaniam also said steps were being taken to ensure the country’s industrial harmony was preserved, including amending laws to protect workers’ rights.

In conjunction with International Women’s Day yesterday, Dr Subramaniam noted that there was an increased and satisfactory participation of women in the workforce.
