Change in attitude needed, says DPM

PUTRAJAYA: A “change in attitude” is needed among civil servants as they have to be more proactive and innovative in their work to ensure that the Government’s programmes are successfully carried out, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.

The Deputy Prime Minister said it was important for civil servants to meet Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s call for the public sector employees to have speed when executing their tasks to boost Malaysia’s competitiveness in the global arena.

“All these – speed, creative and innovation – will certainly have a positive impact on the administration. This is what the public demands from us.

“To attain success and excellence, we cannot continue to be at our old mark or remain at the same level of efficiency that we are usually at.

“If speed is required when executing tasks, then civil servants will have to change their attitude and meet the challenge.

“They will have to adopt a positive attitude and work closely together to realise the Government’s agenda,” he said at the Prime Minister’s Department dinner last night.

Muhyiddin said with the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) in place, civil servants were required to be more responsive towards the Government’s aspiration and be more sensitive towards the “need and want” of the rakyat.

“We are blessed because our country has a government that is strong, stable and progressive and its civil servants are people who are dedicated, responsible and committed in their work and serving the people.”

He said the Prime Minister’s Department staff must be aware of the heavy task they have to shoulder, including to monitor policy and strategy implementation, programmes and development plans.

The Deputy Prime Minister also said it was important for the staff to participate in sports and recreational activities which allow them to interact with each other outside the perimeters of work.
