SPM

SCHOOL GLEE: Jumping for joy when your SPM results are good — Filepic
THE time of the year when school-leavers around the country receive their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results has just passed.
To those who scored high marks, I wish you all my heartiest congratulations and do keep up the great work.

To those who did not, do not despair and never give up because this is not the end, but the beginning of a second chance in life.

As a former secondary school student a decade ago, allow me to take the opportunity to impart a few words of advice.

To those who achieved excellence in their SPM, remember to be down-to-earth and understand that having many As does not always equate success in post-secondary school and beyond, nor does it always mean that one is truly intelligent.

The reason I say this is because I know of someone who allowed her success and arrogance to overcome her until she ended up throwing away her own future.

This classmate, an all-rounder excelling not just academically but in various extra-curricular activities, had a  passion for the fine arts.

After she graduated at the top of our class with straight As in the SPM, she obtained a scholarship to study abroad. When she settled into life overseas, arrogance overtook her.

Instead of studying hard and learning new things at the university, she neglected her studies by frequenting nightspots where she indulged in alcohol and sex.

To cut the story short, she is now a drop-out struggling to make ends meet for her child and a not-so-happy
life in my hometown.

Is it all worth it to allow success to get into one's head to the point of self-destruction?

On the other hand, I know of another schoolmate who is now a success despite not being a high-achiever.

Although she did not score well in her SPM, she had a passion for humanities and literature which made up for her weakness in the sciences.

Despite being looked down upon by her peers and their parents a decade ago, her perseverance paid off.

She is now a postgraduate student at a university overseas who is treated with much respect.

The secret to her success is a burning determination and diligence to defy the odds in life despite being labelled a 'no-hoper' back in Malaysia just because she did not score excellently in her SPM.

The endless love and support she received from her family and a few nice people also played a part. Despite
all that, she remains down-to-earth.

She is living proof for all non-achievers that there are always second chances after SPM. As long as you persevere with your heads held high and have your own strengths, success will happen.
