Professors can enjoy promotions without holding admin posts

PUTRAJAYA: The Prime Minister’s call to raise the salaries and expedite the promotions of top performers in the public sector has been well-received by the Higher Education Ministry, with the salary scheme for professors to be revised.

Professors will be able to enjoy promotions up to the highest grade without holding administrative posts at public universities.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the move would put an end to politicking at universities, as professors no longer needed to vie for top administrative posts.

“They can focus solely on their individual expertise through re-search activities, and this will help Malaysia realise the New Economic Model,” he said in a press release.

The ministry also hoped that the Government would not limit the salary scheme review to professors, as improving the salaries of academic staff as a whole would encourage the involvement of fresh graduates in aca-demia.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced on March 9 a range of Government initiatives to ensure faster career advancement for dentists, doctors and pharmacists.

Meanwhile, Bernama reports that the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) hoped that the newly-announced comprehensive career advancement plan for doctors, dentists and pharmacists would help retain the doctors in the public sector.

MMA pesident, Dr David Quek said this was also a vital move to maintain the number of doctors in the public sector, which currently was declining.

“It would certainly encourage more doctors working in the government hospitals and clinics to remain in the service rather than consider venturing out into private practice,” he said in a statement here, yesterday.
